Editorial Standards
This page explains how articles on this site are written, what sources we draw on, how we keep content current, and how our commercial relationships work. We publish it because we think you should be able to hold us to it.
Who writes the content
Every article on French Bulldog is written by Richard Barker, the owner and editor of the site. Richard has raised a French Bulldog since 2020 and bred one KC-registered litter in 2022. He is not a vet, and no article on this site claims veterinary authority. Where an article covers a health topic, the content is grounded in published sources from veterinary and welfare organisations, named in each article and linked where accessible.
The author archive lists every article published on the site.
Veterinary and welfare sources
Health and welfare content on this site draws primarily from the following authorities:
- Royal Veterinary College (RVC) VetCompass programme. The UK's largest database of clinical veterinary records, used for breed-level epidemiology including French Bulldog health conditions.
- PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals). UK veterinary charity providing peer-reviewed pet health guidance.
- Kennel Club (KC). Breed health testing requirements, the Assured Breeder Scheme standards, and breed-specific health schemes.
- British Veterinary Association (BVA). Clinical guidance on brachycephalic breeds, raw feeding, and other topics where the BVA has published a position.
- WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association). Global nutrition guidelines and clinical reference material for feeding and diet.
- FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation). Nutritional guidelines for pet food labelling and adequacy standards.
- Dogs Trust and RSPCA. Behaviour, training and welfare guidance where cited.
Every health article lists its specific sources in a Sources section at the foot of the page, with links to the original documents where these are publicly accessible.
We do not publish health claims that are not backed by a named source. Where uncertainty exists in the literature, we say so rather than presenting a false consensus.
What this site is not
Nothing on French Bulldog constitutes veterinary advice. Every health page carries a prominent disclaimer and directs readers to consult their own registered vet before making decisions about their dog's health, diet or treatment. No article is a substitute for a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a professional consultation.
Update policy
Articles are reviewed and updated when:
- The underlying source material changes (for example, updated PDSA guidance or revised KC health schemes)
- A reader or a vet reports an inaccuracy through the contact page
- A significant new research publication changes the established picture
- Costs cited in surgery or insurance articles drift significantly from real-world figures
Every article displays the date it was last updated. Health articles display "Last reviewed", other articles display "Last updated". The date reflects a substantive review, not a minor formatting correction.
Veterinary review
Some health articles will carry a "Veterinary reviewed by" line naming a qualified vet who has reviewed the content for clinical accuracy. This will include the reviewer's name, credentials and the date of review. Where this line is absent, the article has not been independently reviewed by a vet and should be read accordingly.
We will never publish a fictional reviewer name. If no genuine veterinary review has been commissioned, no reviewer is named.
Affiliate and advertising disclosure
French Bulldog is published commercially. The site earns revenue through:
- Display advertising served by Google AdSense. Ad content is determined by Google's systems and is not controlled by this site.
- Affiliate links. Some articles contain links to products or services where this site may earn a commission if you make a purchase. The products linked are ones the editorial team believes are relevant and worth your attention. Commission relationships do not influence what is written or recommended; if a product would not make this list on merit, it does not appear.
- Pet insurance affiliate links. Some articles link to pet insurance providers. We are not FCA authorised to give financial advice. Insurance content on this site is general information only. Always read the full policy terms before purchasing.
Every article that contains affiliate links carries a disclosure at the top of the page. We do not write sponsored content in exchange for payment. Editorial decisions are made independently of commercial relationships.
